How To Use “Seasons” To Make You A Better Leader

When you hear the term “seasons,” more than likely, the obvious comes to mind.

And while the word certainly applies to winter, spring, summer and fall, it also rings true in our lives.  As leaders, you need to know when to hold them, fold them, and cut them, too.

Everyday life at work, home, or in the boardroom is filled with endless transition and constant change that leads us directly into the unknown. So how can you use what we already know, to help you in what you don’t know? Seasons. When you figure out what season you’re in, you stop making out-of-season decisions that make life hard. Here’s how to take inventory.

Winter

This season is typically reflective of times of drought, closed doors and the “end” of things.

It is crucial that you stay plugged in spiritually and that you find creative ways to keep your dreams afloat, because the silence and the cutting away of such comforts, as people, places and objects, can most definitely get to you.

During my “dry” seasons in life, I often found myself in isolation and at times lacking one or more resource. When this occurs, you have to consider your conditions and adjust accordingly. If you find yourself in a place of lack, here’s what to do: prune and/or shed.

It is not the time to add on new projects, go on a spending spree, or even to spend $5 on a latte every morning. Save that for summer or spring. It is also not the best season to engage in too many social activities.

You will need every ounce of energy during arid periods, because they can be mentally draining.

Weigh your options and set realistic goals on a weekly and monthly basis.  These should be quick wins, that plant seeds for spring.

Although it may appear that you have time on the surface to give, it can keep you from focusing on preparing for spring. Remember, winter is just one season. Pour your energy into an exit strategy.

Hang up photos of budding flowers, listen out for the sweet tunes of birds to come and ready yourself for the introduction of new life to be ushered in.

Difficult times do not last always. Stay encouraged and focused.

Spring

It is colorful, vibrant and spirited in a number of ways.

Spring brings hope, new beginnings and signs of life. It is often synonymous with new opportunities, open doors and even rebirth.

Seeds of faith, hard work, love and ambition often start to bloom in this season, bringing you immense joy.

Unlike winter, spring lends the chance to test out life, minus the shed things. However, do not take off running just yet, as you may be just getting your feet back on solid ground.

Pace yourself, stop and smell the roses and take time to enjoy small victories, as you cart away a few buckets of previously planted crops.

You did the hardwork during winter by preparing for “your next.”  You allowed the pruning process to occur gradually and naturally and now it is time to witness the beauty of your efforts.  Use this time to get some rest! You more than likely just fought a mighty Goliath, depleting much of your energy.

Recharge, refuel and relax, but do not fall into neutral gear spiritually, because the minute you take it too easy, there very well could be another hurdle lurking behind the rose bush. Stay prayed up and in faith and do not start browsing your favorite online stores just yet. You are making tremendous progress, but remember- baby steps…(cont’d).
