#Over35: Physician, Dr. Michele C. Reed, “Fit Doc”
#over35 is a series looking at the self-care routines of busy, female leaders over 35, putting themselves first.
Over the past ten years, my self-care routine has been consistently reevaluated and fine tuned.
As a physician, I realize that throughout my day, things might not go as smooth as I would like, but the first thing that I must do is take care of myself.
In my private practice, at least once a day, a patient will come in stressed out from trying to be the superwoman that we grow up believing the we ought to be. Meditation and exercise was something that I started in junior high school and for me it was called taking care of myself.
Over the past ten years, as my career and fitness goals shift, what was an early run alone or with Black Girls Run after my morning meditation and prayer has now changed to morning meditation with cardio and strength training three times a week in the evening. My self-care routine provides a quiet time for me to breath, pray and reflect in the moment that leads to spiritual and mental clarity.
As a result of me helping to make sure that I feel good first, I am now stronger mentally, spiritually and physically. Even in boot camp, I am focused and enjoying my time away from the hubby and sons as I embrace the idea of loving me first before I can love and care for the special males in my life!
Another form of self-care for me is spending time with my girlfriends, as we talk on the phone or in person about life, career and love.
These moments are special because it forces me to truly relax and be present in the moment either alone or with someone else.
