Alphanista Moment: Leave Michelle Alone!

In a Narciso Rodriguez dress, wear it, girl!

I am about sick and tired of folks thinking the Obamas owe them something because they are Black.

We should know by now the Obamas don’t have any “Black” views or opinions and made that very clear throughout the campaign.  They are inclusive, a sort of “new black” that’s been written about time and time again.

Black designers are mad at Michelle because she still hasn’t worn anything by one of them.  To make matters worse, on this week’s address to Congress, Michelle didn’t wear a Black designer again.  Here’s an excerpt from an interview done by WWD with Amnau Eele, co founder of the Black Artists Association:

“It’s one thing to look at the world without color but she had seven slots to wear designer clothes. Why wasn’t she wearing the clothes of a black designer? That was our moment [in regards to the inauguration].”

Here’s something else from a statement they released:

“It’s fine and good if you want to be all ‘Kumbaya’ and ‘We Are the World’ by representing all different countries. But if you are going to have Isabel Toledo do the inauguration dress, and Jason Wu do the evening gown, why not have Kevan Hall, B Michael, Stephen Burrows or any of the other black designers do something too?”

I applaud Michelle for making decisions based on her own interests and tastes and not to pander to interests of others for acceptance.  Now, that’s an Alphanista moment.

oh my god i was saying the same thing! people need to give it up; what they should be trying to do is find out how to get closer to her network and stop writing bitch ass complaints–i love my people but we get too emotional at times instead of being strategic!

I have yet to see an Obama statement on the NY Post Chimp cartoon. The Obamas are very strategic for real

I used to be one of those people who thought she needed to support more blacks, BUT

YES THAT IS an Alphanista moment! Coming into your own and on your own terms.

You know, if black designers spent more time designing dignified classier clothes maybe Michelle would have somethng to wear. The most pop designers like Fetish and Baby Phat is not for Michelle and she is not going to wear any apple bottom jeans. I see her in Tracy Reese if anything and I think she just did a cover wearing that……………………………….

    @ James
Great pick up on that – Obama knows that if he gives it airtime it’s adds credibility – I’m sure he was to call Al Sharptongue and tell him to shut the hell up about it.

Unlike David Patterson who kept going on and on about the SNL skit about him – just leave it alone and you’ll see it disappear!

I love the way Michelle Obama dresses. That is my kind of style. Thank goodness she is making that style of dressing popular because people look at me like I am crazy when I dress like that. I like conservative, but just subjective enough to make a man think.

Oh and I am not sure if this is a coincidence, but all of a sudden after she wore her one shoulder ball gown, every one else is wearing it, but that might just be a coincidence.

OMG! I cannot believe how petty this is. Apparently the clothes that were shown to her were not her style and the designers need look at it as just that and be humble. But you know if and when The First Lady does wear a dress by a black designer, they are going to be all on My Space, FaceBook, Twitter, You Tube and some more stuff, talking about “Michelle Obama wore my design” and praying that other women will follow in her footsteps so that they can make money. It’s all about exposure for them and it’s a shame to play the black card. They need to kick rocks!

@Kim it is petty, even the letter sounds like a cat fight, it’s sweeter than a glass of kool-aid, two snaps in a circle!

    Okay….lol @ Maryann.

LOL. People need to learn how to do them and then let others do them as well. How about someone makes something she likes?

Michelle is featured on the current issue of People Magazine wearing a Tracy Reese dress. So there. Michelle dresses in what is right for her. I doubt she really gives a damn what color the designer’s skin is. I wish Black people would stop trying to “own” the Obamas. They are AMERICA’S first family.

Not only did First Lady Michelle rock Tracy Reese *pink lace outfit* on the cover of People Magazine, she also wore a green dress by Kai Milla , Stevie Wonders\’ wife a few nights ago at an event honouring the legendary Stevie Wonder.

As usual she looks wonderful and I am glad she did based on her own taste and readiness and Reese is a great pic. Thanks for the photos Amoye!

Got something to say?
