Good Life: Bimini

November 24, 2009

Healthy and FreeThanksgiving not only marks the beginning of the Holiday season for many, it also marks the start of the Caribbean season for the rich and famous.

It’s post-hurricane, and most islands are rid of civilian type travelers who only vacation in the Carib during the summers.  Celebrities flock to the Carib during Nov-March, and those who want to sun with them.

Bimini is a little island of the Bahamas.   Since it’s not too far from Miami, FL you can get there by boat to enjoy the nightlife, and many who live in Miami, do.  Bimini is also considered “the real Bahamas”.

Here’s a little more info on Bimini:

It is believed that the Fountain of Youth is located in the ocean passage between North and South Bimini. There is also the healing hole which draws many to dip in the waters hoping for health and cures.  The Lost City of Atlantis is believed to be in the shallow waters off of Bimini where divers can observe the symmetrical slabs known as Bimini Stones. Many believe that the Bimini Stones may have been a road leading into Atlantis.

Maybe you want to put this place down as a alpha-certified place to visit in 2010.  It’s known, but not too known.  Perfect fodder for the ambitious traveler!

POLL: What Are You Doing For Thanksgiving?

November 23, 2009

"I'm doing #4, where is he?!"

Though we think of the Holidays as a “must do” there are many others who are working, traveling and spending it alone by choice or circumstance.

If you are in this type of situation, understand that Thanksgiving is anything you make it.  Light some candles, get a TG dinner from a takeout spot (Boston Market counts), pop in a movie and enjoy your day. Many of you are going through breakups, lay offs, and just uncertainty.  At this time, you may need to take care of yourself without the stimulation of crowds, stress, and other folks.  Unfortunately, what they say is not always true:  That being around others will help you feel better.  Sometimes, it doesn’t.

Don’t feel compelled to explain absences or withdrawal.  On the other hand, if you have a big day planned, enjoy it nonetheless.   At the end, it’s about you.  So, what are you doing?

Weekend Rewind: Why I Date White And I’m Alrrright….

Rapper Eve is known for dating "white" and is rumored to be engaged to a white man

Rapper Eve is known for dating "white" and was rumored to be engaged to a white man

If I had a penny for all the reads, this one still gets.  Classic.  Enjoy! (Nikki pls get in touch me for an update ;)

Love, love, love my black men. But I want to get married.

If Eve, Halle, Alfre Woodard, and others can do it what makes me so special?

I did not have the time to wait around for them to approach me or ask for my number.  I started to be interested in white men when I saw how differently they interacted with their women.  I immediately stopped going to black events to see how they really do it.  Last summer, with some friends at work we went to some white after work lounges and some networking events.

I noticed the men are way more social than black men.  They walk up to women, give them compliments, buy them drinks and are more confident.  It is a myth that black men are these confident, cool men.  The ones I met are afraid and fearful.  But so are black women.  How can two scared people love each other?  Below are my reasons why I date white, and it’s allllright….

1.  White boys take you home to meet their mamas sooner

2.  White boys are already planning second date on first date

3.  White boys know traditional home and family life and value that

4.  White boys like to spend money to make up for any “shortages”

5.  White boys are hella freakish in bed they started the whole “you know what” then black guys started doing “you know what” in the 90s

6.  White boys enjoy going out and experiencing new cultures and events without feeling “uncomfortable”

7.  White boys got good credit (mine bought me a MAC gold laptop without droppin a dime at the store)

8.  White boys got good credit!  (a better quality of life is guaranteed)

9.  White boys usually have a home or fly ass apartment with the payments on-time and an awesome wine selection

10.  White boys are tired of white women

Contrary to popular belief:  NO I AM NOT LOOKING AT MY WHITE BOY AND WISHING HE WAS BLACK.  NO, I DO NOT MISS BLACK MEN.  I am happy and loved and cherished.  I really don’t even see a color in my white boy anymore.

Yes, I do call him my “white boy’ and he loves it.   Many black women are jealous of those of us who step out.   We are not with a store clerk, but prominent, paid white collar white men who are proud to showcase us.   I still dated black when I met my white boy, but I’m too busy, now.  Got engaged on New Years Eve 4.5 carats.  We are having a Jewish wedding, and then moving into his lovely home in Hartsdale, NY.   Don’t knock it, till you “white” it.

Can Married Men Have Female Friends?

November 20, 2009

By now it's too late....

So, I asked this question on Twitter the other day.  With the world full of single women, and unhappy married men, can things get complicated? I was surprised by the responses.  It’s safe to say that most people say NO.

An alpha would never consider sharing her husband’s time, without giving them all a pass, as most husbands would expect the same from their wife.  At least very traditional marriages.  As someone once said, a husband’s/wife’’s covenant with each other is stronger than the one he/she has with friends.  It should be.

See below!

straf @MaryannReid that is completely inappropriate…(from a man)

EstilominaPR@MaryannReid is it better that he talk to them outside the house lol? Come on

Jubilance1922@MaryannReid yes, if the female friend is friends with the wife too, & she should call @ a respectable time

KamrynAdams @MaryannReid Not at all. I’d be leary of a woman friend that did NOT call my house. My demand is: They call here or not at all.

lanorise@MaryannReid : respect should be given and not call his house neither should he call hers! (from a man)

Te_Erika@MaryannReid @Te_Erika hell yeah! As long as they respect the game. Wont force a man 2 choose.

A Brief Guide to Self-Care

November 19, 2009

womanwithfoodLet’s start with food.

If you work 9-5, how do you feed yourself during the week?  Coming home to good, wholesome meals make the days go by faster and make them just a bit sweeter.  But how can you cram all that in with just a few hours a night to yourself after a long day?

You plan ahead!  Here are some tips below.

1)  Cook an extra meal you can freeze on every other Sunday.  This meal may be taken to lunch or eaten for dinner days or weeks later.  Best foods to make and freeze are pastas, and Mexican foods like enchiladas, quesadillas, burritos, etc.

2)  Invest in plastic wrap and parchment paper to go with foil.  These tools will help you safely freeze food for later consumption.

3) Cook brown rice a few days in advance, like Sunday.  And fill in with fresh foods–meats, veggies or both during the week.  By Tuesday, Wed, cook some more rice or a completely new dish.

4)  Go to Costcos, BJs, Trader Joe’s and stock on those frozen sides like:  asparagus, spring rolls, sweet potato fries, potatos au gratin, etc.  Then all you have to do is make a main.

5) Buy a whole precooked chicken and make sandwiches for lunch and dinners through the week.

Treat yourself to takeout on Fridays and weekends.  You’ll feel much better doing this after a full week of self care.  Reward yourself!

Extra tip: You also may opt for prepackaged foods and health programs like Medifast.
